How to Choose the Right Steel Grating? — Five Steps to Get It Right

Choosing steel grating may sound complicated, but if you answer five questions in order, you’ll find the right specification and material for your project. Those five questions are: span, load, environment, installation method, and surface finish. Let’s go through them one by one.

Step 1: Determine the support span

Span is the clear distance between the two beams (or walls) that support the grating. This is the most critical piece of data because the span directly decides how thick the bearing bars need to be.

  • How to measure it: Look at your platform or trench drawings and find the distance between the supporting structures. For a new project, the drawing should have it marked.

  • Typical span ranges:

    • ≤ 0.8 m → light load – ordinary bearing bars (e.g. 25×3mm) are enough

    • 0.8–1.2 m → medium load – we recommend 30×3mm or 32×5mm

    • 1.2–1.8 m → medium‑heavy load – we recommend 40×5mm or 50×5mm

    • 1.8–2.5 m → heavy load – we recommend 65×6mm or I‑bar

    • 2.5 m → requires special design – please consult us

Note: The longer the span, the thicker and wider the bearing bars needed. Don’t stretch the support spacing too far to save money, or the grating will deform or even break.

Step 2: Determine the load requirement

Loads come in two types: uniform load (how many kilograms or kilonewtons per square meter) and concentrated load (how many kilograms at a single point, like a forklift wheel).

  • Typical loads for common situations:

    • People only (inspection, walkthrough) → 2–3 kN/m² is enough

    • People + hand cart → 4–5 kN/m²

    • Light forklift (≤2 tons) → 10–15 kN/m²

    • Medium truck → 20–30 kN/m²

    • Heavy truck, aircraft → above 40 kN/m² – needs a custom design

  • How to figure it out: If you’re not sure, just tell us what vehicles will run on it, how often, and what the maximum wheel load is. We can help estimate.

Step 3: Determine the environment

The environment decides the material and corrosion protection level. Here’s a simple breakdown:

Step 4: Determine the installation method

The installation method affects whether the grating needs pre‑drilled holes, clips, or welding.

  • Welded fixing: Strongest – good for permanent platforms. Requires on‑site welding and touch‑up painting after welding.

  • Clip / clamp fixing: Removable – good for trench covers or drains that need regular cleaning or access.

  • Direct laying (no fixing): For temporary use only – not recommended for long‑term installation. (Trench covers with a frame around them can be laid directly without extra fixing.)

Note: If you choose welding, let us know whether you need us to leave space for welding (e.g., notching the edge band). If you choose clips, we can supply the matching clips with your order.

Step 5: Decide if you need a special surface finish

Besides standard hot‑dip galvanizing (silver gray), we also offer:

  • Serrated / anti‑slip surface: Good for oily, wet or sloped areas. Adds about 10% to the cost, but greatly improves safety.

  • Color powder coating: Available in any RAL color – for architectural finishes or safety warnings (e.g. yellow stair tread nosings).

  • Epoxy / polyurethane coating: For highly corrosive environments – coating thickness 200–300 microns, higher cost.

  • Stainless steel polishing: Mirror or brushed finish – for food factories, clean rooms, or architectural decoration.

Quick selection example

Suppose you have an outdoor platform where workers walk and move materials with hand carts. The span is 1.2 meters, and it’s located in an ordinary inland city (not coastal).

  • Step 1 – Span 1.2 m → recommend bearing bars 30×3mm or 32×5mm

  • Step 2 – Load (people + hand cart) → about 5 kN/m² → the above bars are enough

  • Step 3 – Environment – ordinary outdoor → carbon steel, hot‑dip galvanized

  • Step 4 – Installation – permanent platform → welded fixing

  • Step 5 – Surface – need anti‑slip → choose serrated

Final recommendation: Welded steel grating, bearing bars 32×5mm at 30mm spacing, cross bars at 50mm spacing, serrated surface, hot‑dip galvanized.
