Steel Grating Surface Finishing – Choose the Best Anti‑Rust Protection for Your Project

Surface finishing is the key to steel grating’s service life and suitability for different environments. A good finishing greatly improves weather resistance and protects against moisture and chemicals.

We offer the following finishing options.

1. Hot‑Dip Galvanising – The Gold Standard for Outdoor Durability

This is our most recommended and widely used finishing.

· Process: The welded steel grating is dipped into nearly 450°C molten zinc, forming a dense zinc‑iron alloy layer on the surface.

· Advantages:
– Full protection – even complex shapes get uniform coating.
– Sacrificial anode effect – even if the coating is scratched, zinc corrodes first, protecting the base steel.
– Thick and long‑lasting – zinc layer typically above 65µm. In standard outdoor environments, it gives 20‑50 years of corrosion protection.

· Best for: Most outdoor and industrial applications – walkway platforms, stair treads, industrial trench covers. The most cost‑effective corrosion protection.

2. Electro‑Galvanising (Cold Galvanising) – Budget Indoor Protection

Electro‑galvanising provides basic electrochemical protection and a bright look.

· Advantages:
– Lower cost than hot‑dip galvanising.
– Smooth, bright white surface.

· Limitations:
– Thin coating – far less durable than hot‑dip. Not suitable for wet or outdoor use.
– Less uniform on complex shapes.

· Best for: Dry indoor areas, or where corrosion resistance is not critical (e.g. interior equipment grating, decorative parts).

3. Powder Coating – Colour + Corrosion Resistance

Powder coating gives both protection and a choice of colours.

· Process: Plastic powder is electrostatically sprayed onto the grating, then baked to form a hard plastic layer.

· Advantages:
– Many colours – green, grey, yellow, etc.
– Good resistance to some chemicals (weak acids, weak alkalis).
– Soft touch – non‑conductive, non‑thermal.

· Best for: Municipal facilities needing colour coding, garden fences, interior decoration, or areas with specific chemical resistance requirements.
